Première nature tour to India: bears and markhors in the Himalayas

Tucked away amongst the towering mountain ranges of the Himalayas lies one of Asia’s most fascinating natural regions: Kashmir. On this exceptional nature tour, we’ll journey through wooded valleys, rugged mountain landscapes and remote highlands where rare animal species still roam freely. From the forests of Dachigam to the wild mountain slopes of Kazinag and the high-altitude landscapes of Drass and Baltal Thajwas, this journey offers a unique opportunity to experience the unspoilt wilderness of the western Himalayas. With expert guidance, patience and a little luck, we will set out in search of three remarkable species: the Asian black bear, the Himalayan brown bear and the impressive markhor.

→ THIS IS A PREMIÈRE NATURE TOUR. WE DID NOT ORGANISE THIS TRIP YET AS A GROUP TOUR BUT HAVE EXPERIENCE ON THE GROUND.

The journey begins in the enchanting Kashmir Valley, an oval-shaped plain surrounded by a wide belt of forests and mountains. The landscape forms a harmonious mosaic of lush forests, fruit orchards and traditional villages that blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. This region is also an important habitat for the Asian black bear. In the nearby Dachigam National Park, once the Maharaja’s hunting ground and now a 141-square-kilometre protected nature reserve, we explore a spectacular landscape of alpine meadows, deep ravines, waterfalls and dense forests nestled amongst the high mountains. During three days in the park, we will search for Asian black bears as they move through the forests in autumn. At this time of year, just before their hibernation, they are in a phase of hyperphagia during which they gather food intensively. As a result, they are remarkably active and considerably easier to observe than in other seasons.

Icons of the Himalayas

Further west lies the unspoilt Kazinag National Park, one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the western Himalayas. High mountain peaks, dense forests and the crystal-clear Kishanganga River form the habitat of various rare animal species here. One of Kashmir’s greatest natural icons lives on the rugged mountain slopes: the markhor. This impressive wild mountain goat is recognisable by its long spiral horns and is one of Asia’s most spectacular ungulates. From a welcoming homestay, we undertake guided walks to areas where adult males descend to lower altitudes in the autumn. With a bit of luck, we can observe these majestic animals as they move through the rocky mountain landscape.

The impressive Himalayan brown bear

The final leg of the journey takes us to the high-altitude mountain regions of Drass and the Baltal Thajwas Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, amongst alpine meadows, rugged mountain valleys and glacial landscapes at altitudes of over 5,000 metres, lives one of Asia’s rarest bears: the Himalayan brown bear. This impressive subspecies of the brown bear belongs to one of the oldest lineages within the species and is found only in small, scattered populations in the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and the western Himalayas. In the valleys around Drass, these bears are seen relatively regularly as they search for roots, berries, insects and small animals. In the virtually untouched Baltal Thajwas reserve, where vehicles are not permitted, nature has been able to recover undisturbed and the bears have reappeared in recent years. An encounter with these rare mountain dwellers is an unforgettable highlight of this journey through wild Kashmir.

Jan is one of the top nature guides in our team. He was the very first person in the Benelux to organise successful snow leopard tours, at a time when this was still considered ‘impossible’. Jan is a decisive guide with a keen understanding of people, guaranteeing professional guidance. He will do his utmost to answer your questions positively. He loves to take you under his wing, show you fantastic things, let you experience nature and peppers his guidance with a good dose of humour. During the trips, Jan likes to focus on mammals, but make no mistake... With a lifetime list of over 5,000 bird species, he’s also a real expert on birds. Admittedly, in a laid-back sort of way! Accommodation, transport and flights

You will mainly stay in comfortable hotels and guesthouses, with air conditioning, hot water and fast Wi-Fi.

Due to the remote location of the Markhor region, hotel accommodation is not available here. Instead, we will stay with local mountain dwellers, offering a unique insight into life in this mountainous region.

You will stay in a twin room and share the bathroom facilities with other guests.

Single rooms are not available here. Bringing a warm sleeping bag is recommended in any case.

Indian cuisine is generally well-liked and of excellent quality. All meals (from arrival to departure) are included in the price.

Transport is by air-conditioned hire cars, mainly on good roads.

This trip takes us deep into the mountains of Kashmir. Day hikes are a regular feature of the programme, so a good level of fitness is required.

Srinagar lies at an altitude of around 1,500 metres, but during the trip we will regularly venture into considerably higher areas. Some walks may take place at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,000 metres.

For those who wish, porters can be arranged to carry photographic equipment or a day rucksack.

International flights are not included in the price. Once the trip is confirmed, we will send a proposal to the participants. You can book flights through STARLING if you wish. Of course, you are free to book the flights yourself. We estimate that flights will cost around 1000 – 1500 euros per person.

Climate and clothing

In Kashmir, the weather in September and October is usually mild and pleasant during the day, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25°C, but it can get noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings, sometimes dropping to 5–10°C, particularly in mountainous areas. It is therefore advisable to dress in layers: light clothing for the daytime, supplemented with a warm jumper or fleece and a light jacket for the cooler moments. Comfortable walking shoes, a scarf, sunglasses and possibly a light rain jacket are also useful to bring, as the weather in the mountains can change quickly.

Photography

This trip offers excellent opportunities for nature and landscape photography, so enthusiasts are sure to be in their element. However, this is not a photography trip where everything revolves solely around taking photos.
