Exclusive photography expedition to Canada: Arctic wolves in the far north

Vincent Munier is a renowned name in the world of nature photography. He is fascinated by harsh natural environments and often travels to the most remote and inhospitable areas to photograph animals. He prefers to photograph wildlife confronted by the elements. After visiting Japan for cranes, China for snow leopards and Snowhill for emperor penguins, he pushed the boundaries to one of the most remote places in the world, Ellesmere Island. Here, he came face to face with Arctic wolves! One of the most extraordinary mammals in the world and extremely rarely seen, let alone photographed. One big plus? These animals are not shy of humans, and if you find them, they will come closer than you could ever dream. Are you ready for this immense adventure?

The travel dates are subject to change depending on the flights.

Arctic atmosphere

Photographing Arctic wolves is done in style: wrapped up in a warm, down-filled parka. With a thick hat, gloves and warm snow boots. We spend hours on the tundra looking for Arctic wolves. If we succeed, one thing is certain. You will experience an incredible show that cannot be surpassed. The landscape you find yourself in and the winter conditions appeal to the imagination. It is not uncommon to end up in a dazzling snowstorm… But it is precisely these conditions that make for the most unique photos.

Every day we set out, regardless of the weather forecast: freezing cold sunrises, light or heavy snow showers, foggy or sunny… Every type of weather offers unique opportunities to take impressive photographs. Arctic wolves and other Arctic animals are not bothered by the weather. And although it is challenging, these are perfect weather conditions for photographing the silent hunters with their piercing yellow eyes. White on white, in its purest form. You will learn how to expose well in snowy conditions and how to protect your equipment and yourself from the cold.

One, two… polar wolves

The number one target species is, of course, the polar wolf. But we will also be able to see other bonus species such as musk oxen, Arctic hares, Arctic foxes… and various marine mammals. With a lot of luck, we may even see narwhals or belugas.

Mastering photography techniques

There is probably nothing more memorable than capturing a polar wolf on camera. To immortalise this moment, you will be guided by the Maradona of our team. Yves Adams is the photography guide at STARLING with the most snow experience. He has already guided dozens of trips to the Far North and is the perfect man for this trip.

During this trip, your guide will take the time to show you how to photograph fast action, regardless of the brand or type of your camera. Other settings and the choice of the right autofocus (AF) to take sharp pictures will also be discussed. Exposing white subjects in a white environment is a tough challenge for your camera. So we will discuss that in detail too. And before we head out into the cold, we will prepare you carefully. How should you dress, how can you protect your equipment and how can you best use your lens and tripod? We leave nothing to chance, so that you can fully enjoy what may be the greatest bird action your lens will ever see! Before the trip, we organise an extensive information session to get to know each other and discuss the trip in detail.

Accommodation, transport and flights

We fly to Grise Fiord (flights not included) and travel by snowmobile to Eureka and back.

Flights to Grise Fiord are not included in the price, but we are happy to suggest a suitable flight schedule from London or Manchester (or another airport of your choice), depending on your personal preference. The choice is yours whether you book the flights through STARLING or on your own. For flights to and from Resolute Bay or Grise Fiord, you should expect to pay approximately 3,500 – 6,500 euro per person.

Climate, clothing and photography

Very warm clothing is essential for this trip. Guide Yves can carefully explain how to dress and what clothing is suitable for these temperatures. Expect widely varying temperatures, ranging from -5 to -30 °C. And even lower wind chill temperatures!

We will never travel far, but deep snow, cold temperatures and long days will challenge us. Everyone is welcome on this trip, and with the right clothing, you will be able to brave the cold.

Photography

We mainly photograph action, so fast cameras are the best choice, with lenses ranging from 200 mm to 600 mm.

Lens covers will protect your valuable equipment. On a typical day, we take a lot of pictures. In this cold, you will need to bring plenty of spare batteries. Large and, above all, very fast memory cards are also necessary!

We also recommend that you bring a laptop with fast card readers and storage drives. You will be amazed at how many pictures you can take per session.
